Background

About the project

Democracy in Action (DiA) is a Horizon Europe-funded initiative exploring how grassroots movements, cultural spaces, and digital innovations can strengthen democratic participation. With a special focus on youth, women, ethnic minorities and night culture, we bring together researchers, grassroots movements, and policymakers to create bold new ways for citizens to shape democracy - online, in cultural spaces, and on the streets.

Why now?

Democracy is at a crossroads

Across Europe, democratic values are under pressure. Citizens feel disconnected from decision-making, political polarization is rising and trust in institutions is declining. Yet, at the same time, new forms of civic engagement - through culture, social spaces , and digital platforms - are emerging.

This moment presents both a challenge and a unique opportunity: how can we harness grassroots initiatives and digital spaces to create a more inclusive, participatory democracy?

Who we are

Connecting grassroots communities for democratic change

Our team spans universities, cultural institutions, and community-led initiatives, all dedicated to exploring how arts, culture, nightlife and digital spaces can strengthen democracy. From academics conducting groundbreaking research, to grassroots organizations working directly with communities: our project thrives on collaboration. We work alongside independent theaters, cultural centers, digital platforms, and activist networks that engage with democracy in creative and innovative ways.

Hear from our researchers

Everybody has a reason to take part. Learn theirs.

"For us, democracy emphasizes what we have in common. Which is way more than what divides us. With the research we want to highlight these different commonalities and see how we can foster these for democracy."

Nightivism

Nightlife is more than entertainment — it’s a space for freedom, activism, and political expression.

Women

Grassroots movements use creative expression to challenge gender norms, advocate for policy change, and create safe spaces for women and non-binary individuals.

Youth

Young people are at the forefront of democratic innovation, yet their voices are often overlooked in policymaking. Cultural initiatives provide a vital platform for youth engagement, allowing them to shape narratives, influence decisions, and reimagine democracy.

Ethnic Minorities

Cultural grassroots organizations amplify the voices of ethnic minorities, preserve heritage their, and advocate for their rights through music, visual arts, and community initiatives.
